Honoring Value: The Rai Stone Legacy Behind Our Trophies
On the island of Yap, massive limestone discs known as Rai stones were used as a unique form of money. Too heavy to move, they stayed in place while ownership changed hands through oral consensus—sometimes even when a stone was lost at sea. Their value came not from portability or physical use, but from the collective belief in their worth. This concept parallels Bitcoin: a decentralized, non-physical currency secured not by force, but by shared trust and a transparent ledger.

Decentralized Money
Rai stones have been used on the island of Yap for centuries, with origins tracing back as early as 500 AD, and continued to serve as a form of money well into the 20th century. While not used for everyday transactions today, they remain a powerful cultural symbol of value through social consensus.

In Tribute to Better Money
In homage to this monetary history, the trophies for the Better Money Invitational were hand-crafted by Gareth Eckley, resembling floating Rai stones perched on crystal-clear cubes. Their heights distinguish first, second, and third place—symbolizing the spirit of fair competition, shared values, and the enduring power of belief in better money.
